Seasons of Spiritual Dryness
Everyone who walks with God will face seasons where prayer feels dry or distant. You may still believe, but your heart feels numb. Conversations with God seem one-sided. That season can be discouraging—but it is also an invitation into deeper dependence.
Spiritual dryness is not failure; it's often preparation. God sometimes withdraws the felt-sense of presence so we learn to trust Him by faith, not by feeling. The good news: there are practical, biblical steps to press into God even when your heart is numb.
1. Be Honest with God
Bring your dryness before the Lord openly. Many psalms model this—David screams, complains, doubts, and then prays again. God can handle your honesty.
2. Return to Scripture Slowly
Don't force marathon devotions; read short passages, meditate on one verse, or pray a Psalm aloud. Let God's words feed your heart.
3. Establish Small Rhythms
When feelings are weak, habits carry you. Commit to five minutes of prayer, a short Scripture reading, or a simple breath prayer repeated throughout the day.
4. Worship by Choice
Sing, listen to Scripture songs, or read a psalm of praise. Worship shifts the focus from your experience to God's character.
5. Seek Spiritual Community
Confide in a trusted believer or mentor. Sometimes an honest conversation, a prayer together, or shared Scripture reawakens faith.
Closing Encouragement
Dry seasons are temporary. Keep showing up. God's love for you hasn't changed because your feelings shifted. Pray, read, worship, and stay in community—God will meet you as you remain faithful.
